I've been hunting cardinals for weeks now, and I finally managed to shoot one. I was so excited to actually lure one of these guys into my yard!

This is a male northern -- the females don't have the striking red plumage, but are, instead, a lot more interesting in some ways, sporting tawny bodies with red accents.

I'm pretty lucky to have snapped this picture. sits at the very northern tip of the northern cardinal's range. In fact, I don't remember ever seeing one, growing up in . Here in , though, I usually see a few of them every summer.

So here's a thing.

I have not had a Facebook account for over a decade, nor ever had any Meta Incorporated apps on any of my devices. I also run Privacy Badger on my desktop browsers (though admittedly not on mobile).

My partner has recently started getting Facebook friend recommendations for my colleagues - the only connection between her and them being through me.

It's not hard to imagine the sort of dangerous things that can come from this kind of pervasive surveillance marketplace.

Ever do a computer thing, get really proud of yourself, look around to share your excitement, and realize that no one cares? At least the cat is exploiting my excitement to request celebratory treats.

Little secret about Mastodon: the third party unofficial apps are really good! :blobhappy:

Because they've been around a lot longer, the third party apps have more features than the official apps.

You can see links to the third party apps listed underneath the official app links on the Mastodon website, just scroll down the page a bit:

Also, most of the unofficial apps (such as Metatext, Fedilab and Tusky) are open source so outsiders can see exactly what they do and how they work. This makes them just as safe to use as the official apps.

If you haven't tried the third party apps yet, it's well worth giving them a go.

Code reviews are humbling. Whenever I'm on the verge of thinking that I know what am doing a code review reminds me that I do not.

The first episode of Strange New Worlds is truly Star Trek in the best sense of the word!

It's soo freaking weird!

How does a government or state even dares saying it's "illegal" to an abortion on your own body..

Hell, I would become a freaking cyborg and no one could stop me..😠

The makers of @pixelfed, the Fediverse photo sharing platform, have just created a slick new guide to the Fediverse at:

It's got a list of Fedi projects, a list of mobile apps for Fedi platforms and an opt-in directory of people to follow.

The directory is particularly interesting as it works very differently to FediFollows or Trunk. You add hashtags to your profile plus a special extra hashtag , then submit your profile to the site, and it will become searchable for the tags in your profile.

(And, yes, Mastodon is part of the Fediverse, see here for details: mstdn.social/@feditips/1082159)

so um, I was going to spend tonight answering your questions about the updates from the conference I posted earlier...

but I'm more than a little distracted by the supreme court getting ready to overturn my rights as a uterus holder in this country.

I'm worth more than my uterus.

I love being a band parent. I don't find many things more impressive than middle school kids playing jazz.

buying is exactly why it's so important that technologies like exist. Free speech should not be handled by a single billionaire, it should be handled by hundreds of different instances, all with their own definition of free speech (along with the option for anyone to spin up their own instance with their own interpretations).

It's very frustrating that people like Elon Musk and companies like Twitter get so much of the dialog, when amazing decentralized technologies like Mastodon and PeerTube exist. We will continue doing our part every day at tilvids.com to bring awareness to these amazing technologies.
