Completed the #Quake2 Enhanced maps. Looks great, runs great, plays great. Tough -- enemy / weapon balance is off on Medium difficulty; last boss was near impossible. I can't imagine how ballbusting Hard mode must be. Too many *very* tanky enemies. #Quake I & II lack the perfect enemy / weapon balance of #Doom which is the only fault I can raise against the series.
I play for atmosphere / exploration over action so some of the levels were better than others. The different units were clearly the work of different authors so you will see all styles from puzzle to slaughter maps (one map gives you the BFG as the first weapon which pretty much spells out what's to come)
The weapons are good, perhaps even as good as #Doom, but the enemies boil down to a minimum of strategies. The chaingun, plasma rifle and railgun will get you through 90% of the game. They nerfed the railgun so it can take an insane number of shots to take out one enemy. *Nothing* should survive a 4th railgun shot :| If you're shooting at a distance it's not about difficulty, it's just plain tedious.
Regardless, the new campaign is worth the price on its own, the fact you get Quake II 64, also a really great game and the rest of Quake II is just content galore. I've spent a leisurely 18 Hrs (100% secrets) to complete Quake II 64 and the new campaign
Lastly, it runs great on low-end hardware. You can expect to run this at native panel resolution at 60fps even on Intel integrated graphics
