I'm looking to connect with other , , and folks here!

I'm an Assistant Astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute working on galaxies and deep learning.

OK it is really late here, but today's reveal of the first JWST image of the galaxy cluster SMACS-0723 was amazing, and I am still digesting it. There is so much stuff going on, it is absolutely breathtaking!

Just to get an idea of what an improvement this is over Hubble, over at The Robot Report, they show this beautiful side-by-side view of the previous best image taken with Hubble, and tonight's result. It's wild.

NASA has announced the images and data that will be shown at the JWST press conference next week! If you haven't already, now is the time to mark your calendars for Tuesday July 12th at 10:30 am Eastern! 🗓️

This is the first real *science quality* data that the public will see!!

On the exoplanet side, we recently heard rumors that they planned to show an exoplanet spectrum at this event - and now we know what target! I'll put some info about WASP-96b in a thread below ⬇️

I really shouldn't get this excited but my #vim cheat sheet coasters from Etsy has arrived ! :vim: 😍 #GeekGirl

This week's #ThreadThursdays is a mash-up of two of my favorite things, black holes and sci-fi/speculative fiction!!

As an astronomer who researches black holes, I know how they work (well, what humans have learned so far). As a media consumer, I love when the science is plausible at first glance. I'm not a very interrogative fiction reader/viewer & I can suspend my disbelief pretty well, so it just needs to past the shrug test:
"Could something along these lines work?"
*shrugs* "Maybe?"

The new paper "3D-DASH: The Widest Near-Infrared Hubble Space Telescope Survey" now shows 1.4 square degrees of near-infrared imaging with HST!

Check out some massive star-forming galaxies they found!

Simply astonishing black hole shadow image by the showing not just how they compare to solar system scales, but also how much more challenging SgrA* is compared to M87's black hole. Huge progress and clearly a promise of so much more to come! VERY exciting!

I started writing the first #SpaceTalkTuesday thread about planetary habitability, but quickly realized you all need some background on how we *find* planets first!

So sorry to everyone who voted for habitability, but we’re doing HOW TO FIND AN EXOPLANET 🔭 today!

I promise this will make the habitability thread next week make even more sense (1/)

It’s the real #BlackHoleWeek! Mark your calendars for the Event Horizon Telescope’s forthcoming announcement on May 12 at 15:00 CEST (6am Pacific 🥱).

The event will be streamed live on YT at

Will we finally see an image of Sagittarius A* — or something else??

First Deep Sky Object of 2022 - Messier 63 Galaxy

Check out the dusty edge-on galaxy NGC 4517, which harbors an accreting supermassive black hole! To its north we can also see a face-on star-forming galaxy.

@maloki TRUE. So, I'm still discovering them myself, (and these scientists aren't all with NASA) but for now, I'm following @astrobiolena @dpthorngren @thomasconnor @alstev @spacetides @AdiFoord and @_astronoMay
-- obviously not a full list, but they boost each other so it ought to be easy to find more!

Pleased to see the Federation of Astronomical Societies & the Royal Astronomical Society running this 2-day online workshop on the challenge of satellite megaconstellations

Did you see the news that all of the #JWST instruments are aligned now?

Check out this comparison of one of the newly released calibration images from the MIRI instrument compared to images taken of the same region of space by the WISE and Spitzer space telescopes! Look at that resolution! So many newly resolved stars and structures! 🤩

I can't wait for all the new discoveries we'll make with JWST! #Science data starts in only a couple months!

My #FollowFriday suggestions are a bunch of astrophysicists! I'm listing their research specialities, but they're more than their work and have lots of other interests you can check out in their bios!

@AdiFoord - Black Holes, Active Galactic Nuclei

@alstev - Black Holes, Neutron Stars

@thomasconnor - Black Holes

@dpthorngren - Planet Interiors

@astrobiolena - Astrobiology

@spacetides - Planetary Tides

(There are more, but these are the ones actively posting right now!)
