What if the macOS dock and its icons were more dynamic and fluid?
Made a little demo that shows message previews, live music, download progress, and more.
Pretty happy with how this turned out!
@janum Aww. Looking good!
@janum this would be great. Love it.
@janum Apple should have done this instead of the Touch Bar.
@janum reminds me in some very dusty way of the OS 9 Control Strip. Widgets but without stealing screen real estate. Love it.
@janum I would buy that app if you made it!
@janum Love this idea! Hope Apple is paying attention
@janum love this!
@janum Very nice
@janum wow! That’s incredible
@janum This is REALLY cool, I like this
@janum The actual design is pretty sweet! For me though, I would at least like some way to turn it off. The Dock already shoulders too much responsibility. It’s an app launcher. It’s an application manager/switcher. It can hold app notifications/badges. And imo, it gets the job done, but does not excel in any of those tasks.
@janum @macmaniacs That’s nice as long as you have close to nothing in the dock in other words: for those not really using the dock yet, that’s a nice option to finally use it for more specific things. But if you have a lot of Apps, folders and Docs in the dock … nope, I would never use it
@janum looks cool, but the iTunes widget won't work for the vertical dock users like me
@janum @BasicAppleGuy wow! if this was really in macOS I might actually unhide my dock!
@janum You should split-zone the dock so that we could click the upper half for ordinary action or the lower for dock utility – which would be opt-in behavior.
@janum @matthewcassinelli Love this exploration, way to go!
@janum Would love to see that in a future Mac OS update!
@janum Love this so much! Fantastic job
@janum this is an awesome idea. The kind that seems so obvious as soon as you see it.
@janum I like elements of this. Actually I’d love to see an enhanced ‘context menu’ execution of this. Or even on-hover, I def agree the dock icons are perhaps under-utilized to their full potential.
@janum shut up and take my money .gif
@janum very slick, excellent idea!
@janum Very cool! Nice work.
@janum This is incredibly nice! How'd you go about prototyping it so well?
@joeyabanks Thanks Joey! It’s built as an actual app (Swift/UIKit) with my animation engine, Wave.
@janum Love this idea.
Safari draggin’ the line. Seems on point.
@janum Looks super great!
@janum If i ever used my dock i would absolutely love this. Alas, i keep it hidden and try and avoid ever interacting with it. I'm not the target audience, but I shall admire it from afar. :D
@janum looks great! i'd love a pinch gesture to open/close apps on the dock like that
@janum Loving the music controls and the Messages view! This would be great IRL.
@janum Ooooo, that would be sweet. Great concept!
@janum Not for me. It reminds of how Windows would group things in the task bar and you'd have to take two clicks to discover what's there. Gets annoying after a few minutes when you're trying to work quick.
@janum @BasicAppleGuy Would also look good on the iPad dock
@janum Very nice work! It’s really nice you managed to keep the animations minimal and clean ! :D
@janum lovely stuff, that could be quite handy although my dock is quite packed so not sure how it would handle that?
@janum Yes please! Especially like the music controls
@janum I like that!
@janum This is a great idea!
@janum Didn't catch originally that the Safari preview was download progress. Thought it was a tab counter, hahah
