A year ago if you told me that Instagram would be joining the fediverse, I'd think your crazy.

Let's not forget why they are doing this though, thanks to EU laws they have to make data portable, and with federation support they can portray their monopolistic practices in a different light.

Meta is an advertising company, we are their next market to break into. Remember this.

@dansup that's exactly why I am worried when the language used to describe it is "Instagram is joining the fediverse."

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to make a personal jab at you here. It is easiest to use this language in this context. And so it is used.

The problem I have with that is that it assumes what Fediverse is. And I don't think Fediverse is defined solely by the protocol. There are shared values, as nebulous as they are, which are at the core here. And Meta won't espouse them.

@rysiek
Maybe "connecting to" or "plugging into" rather than "joining" would better describe what Meta is doing.
Or maybe "embracing".
IMHO, we're just at the first E in - embrace, extend, extinguish wikiless.northboot.xyz/wiki/Em

@hobs @dansup "connecting to", "federating with", etc are fine, I think, as long as we make it very clear that that alone does not make them a part of fedi.

Let them try to deal with the language difficulty for once, instead of giving it to them on a silver platter.
