Oya! Oya! Oya! Ile design nmejinauwo kwa hii fediverse mtateveva in abundance

Sometimes I try to imagine a world where scientific young minds enjoyed greater rewards for revolutionizing, like, farming methods, manufacturing, or energy, rather than the dark patterns used to optimize ad-clicks at Google and Facebook.

How did we get here?

Just in case you are curious, I am implementing Goblins on Guile in stages. I've finally pushed up the code. I'm on stage 4. gitlab.com/spritely/guile-gobl

Breaking it up this way has been done with the intent that porting to other languages will be easier.

Would anyone be interested in testing a bunch of messaging platforms and apps with me? I'm planning to go in-depth with (in no particular order) Jami, Briar, Cwtch, Matrix, Signal, Session, IRC, XMPP, Mattermost, Rocket.Chat, Zulip, Tox, Threema, DeltaChat, Revolt, and possibly some others.

Reply to this and I'll pong you with details when I'm gearing up for it :02smile:

What comes to mind are these two blog posts from this year:

The Modern Packager's Security Nightmare - Gentoo Blogs
What's in a package - Guix HPC blog by @civodul

some horror stories there - about Rust, Go, and Python.

and I remember @neauoire describing the absurd bandwidth usage by Rust's cargo downloading trees of dependencies.

So, is the @Gaomonpentablet M10K 2018 good on Linux? I investigated that and just published the video ๐Ÿ™‚

Our monetary system is commanded by people who literally believe changing the "one dollar" stamp on a platinum coin to "one trillion dollars" is the solution to running out of money.

Imagine if you tried that with your student loans.

I have decided to delete my YouTube account. It is done. I will set up a Peertube instance instead. Peertube is a decentralized video hosting service, and entirely Free Software: joinpeertube.org/

The updated #Hurd, #glibc, and #GNU #Mach packages are available in #Debian right now. Please upgrade and reboot ASAP!

A lot of work went into making this possible ๐Ÿ˜€

It's very satisfying to see all my exploits fail โ€” and not just in my experimental subhurd, but on the host, running upstream Debian binaries. They just... no longer work, can you believe it?

(That being said, there still are some unpatched vulnerabilities in the Hurd โ€” but there's a lot less of them now.)

Free software is largely built and maintained by people working on it in their free time.

Unless those people are convinced something is a good idea it's not going to happen, no matter how many non-contributors want it.

There are many things you can criticize a free software project for, but the argument that people who aren't contributors or disagree with the project's vision should be able to dictate major decisions is, uh, interesting.

I'd be *very* curious to see some concrete examples of projects where this is supposedly possible.
