Are my search capabilities just shit?? But can anyone recommend good lights? I like the GoPro mount feature as I have the peak design phone holder with the connection underneath but the state of bike lights is such a fucking mess. I want USB-C charging, and a max 800(ish) lumens but trying to find this is hard. Garmin has a couple smart options but I don’t use bike computers

@auxonic @grivettcarnac It really is. I haven't trusted search results for some time. <looks at MagicShine> $700 for a light? 😳

@WTL @grivettcarnac I have some of their cheapest and they’re ok. Don’t like the mounting options for rear but the front ok. Got them from full cycle on sale

@WTL @auxonic yes those have been all over my search results. Like what the fuck, who wants or needs a $700 bike light? There seems to be little in between shitty $35 lights you have to buy on Amazon and complicated gizmos

@grivettcarnac @WTL what I really want is a bolt on front and back light. Basically dynamo style with a nice click on battery that can be removed. Uses a standard 18650 battery inside. Doesn’t exist. Even on aliexpress

@auxonic @WTL uhhhh that would be great.

@auxonic @grivettcarnac I'd like front/back lights that would mount cleanly under my luggage racks, with a wire that heads to the handlebar switch and removable battery.

🤔 I guess I should just make one myself.

@grivettcarnac @WTL @auxonic hand made by retrained lawyers and industry executives.

@johnefrancis @grivettcarnac @WTL I think more VC/techbro billionaires should work in sweatshops

We discussed bike lights (strobing vs. steady) a few weeks ago on #BikeNite, but I don't think we got into brand recommendations.

#BikeNite is a weekly #Fediverse Q&A moderated by @ascentale

You can submit your potential question with #BikeNitePQ, then we'll all get into it Friday evenings (and responses continue to trickle in all week). Follow the #BikeNite hashtag or the @bikenite repeater so you don't miss out on some great #Biking and #Cycling discussion!

@grivettcarnac

There was a #BikeNite #BikeNiteQ question and discussion about this a few weeks ago. Dig back in the time line and ou may find it - iirc there were even a couple links to #DIY LED projects.

My choice was to visit #CanadianTire and search through their products for anything not made by slave labour and cheap, for now, then started looking up #RaspberryPico project - I need soldering practice.

@grivettcarnac Take a look at these. I've been pretty happy with them. You can get different mounts, the ones that came with were not super useful to me unfortunately, but I found some that work.

Edit: the rear light is oddly micro USB, but the front is USB c? The branding is also different. This is super strange since the come together and ever pair together.

@grivettcarnac I've got this
magicshineuk.com/product/evo-1
It's got 3 brightness settings, plus a "Blind God" mode, and has remote mounted control buttons.

@grivettcarnac: Do you need headlights to see or to be seen? Or taillights? For to-be-seen lights: I can recommend Knog's bicycle lights. They either have USB C charging or an integrated A plug. Some are really bright. As USB rechargeable to-see headlight I have one from NiteCore. It's IIRC 1500 lumen, but it's older and still has a MicroUSB port. The successor has USB C + 1800 lumen: flashlight.nitecore.com/produc

Supernova and Lupine also have high lumen models, but I don't know if they have USB C.

@xtaran thanks for the recs. Our ebikes have great lights but just looking for lights for our individual/personal commuter bikes so a bit of be seen and to see. Will check these out cheers

@grivettcarnac: At least the products sold by Lupine and Supernova seem to be mostly tailored for mountain bikes and maybe less suitable for street usage. They're more full beams than low beams or "be seen" lights. The mentioned NiteCore lamps has both, full beam and low beam. (Which is one of the reason why I bought one.)

@xtaran the NiteCore are great and never came across them before so thank you!

@grivettcarnac I like see.sense, but they are more special ;)

@grivettcarnac I just buy PlanetBike lights because I'm invested in their bracket ecosystem from back when I could find them in local stores.

@grivettcarnac if you want a light for the gopro mount that really gives good light, I have a few suggestions depending on your budget.
For one there's the Cateye GVolt 70.1 which is quite powerful at a reasonable price.
It has a bigger brother, the GVolt 100 which is even stronger.
If you have some more cash to spend, check out the Lupine SL Grano. That one has truly amazing light.

@grivettcarnac, why not use a dynamo-powered light on a standard fork crown hook mount?

@grivettcarnac Fenix lights are well priced and often have user replaceable batteries. I like that because it should let the light outlive the battery. They sell a gopro mount separately. fenixlighting.com/collections/
I just got one a few weeks ago. It seems well made.
