Hi, I'm Geoff and I'm a working as a application developer and data engineer in a institute at a large public university in the midwest US. Longtime user, maniac, mech. enthusiast and mouse hater. I'm not a hero, but I am a man!

look, I know this is a child development class, but I think we're missing an important opportunity to talk about why these debates about the usefulness vs sentimental value of children were occuring: because ADULT workers are valued only in terms of their "usefulness." the question everyone has been dancing around this whole time is "when do we stop treating people like they matter?"

:boost_ok: :ablobcatwave: Please boost this post if you would like the EFF to join the fediverse. :ablobcatbongo:

In a survey the EFF sent me, I suggested they create an account on the fediverse, so they can reach more supporters and support innovative free software that promotes interoperability among platforms, something they've advocated for in the past, too.

If you can boost this post, maybe I'll be able to show them that there are quite a few users who would like them here!

The EFF is the infamous nonprofit organisation that fights for privacy, government transparency, and digital freedom. Their fight is very important, and the EFF is very special to me.

You can see some of their work here

In the meantime, you can follow @eff, which is an unofficial mirror of their Twitter.

Begging all cis men to read the rules before posting a photo of their penis on here. Tired of giving out warnings.

You *can*, but within the rules.

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

Did you see the news that all of the #JWST instruments are aligned now?

Check out this comparison of one of the newly released calibration images from the MIRI instrument compared to images taken of the same region of space by the WISE and Spitzer space telescopes! Look at that resolution! So many newly resolved stars and structures! 🤩

I can't wait for all the new discoveries we'll make with JWST! #Science data starts in only a couple months!

I do get a lot of questions from people about being on a certain instance(server) and if that matters for communication with their friends on different instances.

Short answer: No!

You can see Mastodon / Fediverse communication like email! For example, if you are on your FULL handle will be:

"" and if you are on your full handle is:

You can use this "full handle" to search or communicate with people on other instances.

You can read more about how this works here

The best way to post an image on Mastodon:

1. Write your post and attach the image by clicking on the paperclip 📎

2. Don't press Toot yet! Instead, click on "Edit" in the corner of the image.

3. Move the circle so that the 16:9 preview looks nice. This is especially important on images that are portrait or square orientations.

4. Add a text description in the box, so that people browsing in audio will know what is in the image. (A lot of blind people browse the internet in audio through screen readers. Image text also gives you a chance to add details beyond your character limit.)

5. When you've done all that, click "Apply" and then "Toot!"

6. You can read image descriptions by hovering the mouse over the image after posting.

Holy crap, there are so many introductions in my timeline, and from a variety of instances. This makes me happy.

Elon Musk: There remain big differences between Musk’s vision for a free speech utopia and the reality of Twitter.

No matter how lax the moderation or rules, Musk’s Twitter will still be owned by one authority: Him.

Musk can implement policies as he chooses.

He can change his mind as many times as he wants to.

Musk can even read every user’s direct messages—let that sink in.

This Is why many are leaving Twitter for Mastodon.
