Creative Commons fans, which licence should I use for the tips published by this account?

New people, welcome!

If you need help using Mastodon and the Fediverse, check out the Unofficial Guide:

It's got lots of advice for both complete beginners and experienced users. I've tried to write it as clearly and non-technically as possible.

Also, I'm gradually adding all the past posts from FediTips to the guide, and will add future posts too.

If you want to post these tips elsewhere in your own language, please feel free! The tips are meant to be spread as far as possible.

Message me if you have any questions/feedback :blob_cat:

p.s. For an alternative perspective, check out the excellent "Increasingly Less-Brief Guide to Mastodon" by @noelle at:

Right, added a load of tips to the Advanced section:

These aren't actually that advanced, but I didn't want to overwhelm new people by filling the Basics section with stuff to learn.

Advanced is a mixture of slightly trickier stuff and easy stuff that most people wouldn't use every day.

Next up are some more tips in Advanced, then the Admin section, then some more non-Masto additions, then this account goes back to normal service.

If you know someone who is new to Mastodon and the Fediverse, please give them a link to the front page of the guide, it will hopefully answer their questions:

I've greatly expanded the Unofficial Mastodon & Fediverse Guide:

Hopefully this guide now answers most questions that new members seem to have on here.

I've repeated some bits of info in different sections, as people may need the same feature in different contexts.

Will work on the Advanced Tips and Admin section next, and then go back through it to try and add more non-Masto stuff.

Do you run a Fediverse instance?

Do you block other instances?

Do you breakdown your Fediverse blocks by category?

Do you want the Fediverse to be a safer place and are willing to put time/effort into making that happen?

I'd like to talk to you for an upcoming project.

Here are some hints and tips for users wanting to stay safe on Mastodon:

It covers all the safety related tips I've posted so far.

I'll try to add tips related to more Fedi platforms later.

this is a status that has been edited multiple times to change the text, add a poll, and change poll options.

If you want to transfer your Mastodon account from one server to another, here's a step by step guide on how to do it:

(I've re-written and extended the version previously posted, to make everything clearer. The old version left some things unclear.)

I've added more categories to the page, with a single tip in each category as a placeholder:

The idea is I'll gradually add more tips onto the page so that it builds up into something people can refer to.

I'll post on FediTips when a new tip is added.

Asking for money for a brain MRI in emergency, mention of cancer (no details), please boost

Hey fedi friends,

I'm so sorry to make this begpost, but it's for a really really important exam: a brain MRI to see if I have a brain cancer.

It's scheduled on September 21th.

It's gonna cost 194,75€ and living only on my disability benefits, I can't afford it...

Any help would be truly appreciated please, even a boost would be a lot already. Thank you so much 💙

p.s. I've added an Accessibility section, hopefully it gives an idea of how the groupings of tips will work. It won't just be one big long list of tips.

Right, here's the plan:

A big problem with FediTips is that the same tips get repeated quite often because not everyone saw them the first time.

Then, if people half-remember a tip they saw on here, or if they want to find out more about a topic, there's no easy way for them to look it up later.

So, I'm going to change the format of this account to be based around a web page:

(It forms part of a site I run at to encourage non-technical people to host their own online services.)

I'll gradually add sections to the page covering tips from the past year, and will post updates about it on FediTips as I do so.

Any new tips featured on FediTips will also be added to the page. That way, there's always somewhere people can go to to easily catch up on tips they missed.

Any thoughts on this as a plan? Honest feedback appreciated! :blobcat:

No tips today as I'm working on something... 🤫

Gancio is a free open source Fediverse event planning system, aimed at communities wanting to organise their own events instead of using Facebook or Google.

You can interact with Gancio events from Mastodon etc through ActivityPub, and it also supports RSS.

The Gancio website is at and the project's official Fediverse account is at @gancio

The software's code is at

If there are any problems with the site, maybe the best place to post about them is the site's github as the developers will see them there:

I see the Mastodon website has been revamped:

What do you think?

( ⚠️ Warning, it's pretty bright 😁 )

If you're using Mastodon on a computer, there are keyboard shortcuts for most commands.

You can see a list of all the keyboard shortcuts by pressing ? (or shift + ? on some keyboard layouts).

Alternatively click the "Hotkeys" link at the bottom left of the screen.

Trying something new. The first (and maybe last?) "Owncast Update"!

Learn what the project has been up to and discover the upcoming initiatives. As a bonus: some personal thoughts about the project!

If you've attached a video file to your post, it's a good idea to add a text description of what's going on just like you would for an image, so that blind people know what's in it through screen readers.

However, if your video has sound, remember to also describe the audio as well.

Describing sound in captions can be useful to people who are deaf, or those who are in a situation where they can't listen to the sound (on the bus, in a meeting etc).

On Mastodon you can add descriptions to files by attaching them and then clicking "edit" on the web interface, or simply writing on top of them in the official app.

Other Fediverse platforms and apps also support adding text descriptions.

🏃 🚴 🏊 Wondering if there's enough people interested in a fitness-tracking Fediverse instance to explore setting one up?

(reason being that Strava is £££ and centralised, and also non-runners/cyclists/swimmers might get annoyed with daily spamming of the regular timeline...)
