Mastodon.social is far, far too large, I would strongly recommend moving to another server.

The funding is a red herring, because the larger size just means it requires more funding.

There are lots of other good servers (many of which have been around just as long) and are much more reliable.

You can find reliable servers listed on the official Mastodon site at https://joinmastodon.org/servers and I run my own recommended server list at https://fedi.garden
