Starting in Mastodon 4.2.0, you can filter your searches on Mastodon by language.
As no one else has done it, I've written an easy-to-use list of all the language codes used on Mastodon:
https://fedi.tips/language-codes-used-by-mastodon/
Combine these codes with the operator language: to filter your search results.
For example, if you only want Mastodon search results in French you would include language:fr in your search alongside the keywords or hashtags that you're looking for.
@feditips When will we see the ability to easily translate posts here?
Mastodon has already had a translation system for some time. If your server supports it, there will be a "translate" link below posts in a foreign language.
If you can't see a button like this, ask your server admin about it.
Note, the translation system costs money, it may be that your server admin needs donations to keep it going.
@feditips I'm pretty sure I configured my settings to only display English posts, but I still see tons of foreign language posts all the time. Am I missing something?
That's the language filter, which is a different thing:
If you're sure you've set it up correctly, it's possible that some people posting in other languages are accidentally labelling their posts as being in English.
If a non-English speaker signs up on an English language server and they never bother adjusting their default language, their posts may show as English even when they're another language.
@feditips It appears to be a great deal more than "some". Perhaps the onboarding system could make the correct language selection more automatic or exposed to the person posting.
There was originally an automated detection system but if I recall correctly it wasn't hugely reliable and/or consumed resources?
@feditips bilingual people are setting their post language wrong half of the time though (they leave the default). To the point that I modified Mastodon's translation button to not send the source language (so it's auto detected)
Excellent!
One thing I am looking for... It was rumoured that we would be able to choose a setting where those posts we have in our notifications, especially those from people we have followed with the notification bell on, would be sifted out of our home feed.
Can't find it.
You could do that by adding them to a list, and then setting the list to be hidden from your Home feed:
@feditips I just now noticed that it's possible to set the language of a toot, something I've never done in the past! @_@
