If you're looking for a reliable and responsibly moderated Fediverse server to sign up on or move to, I run a website that lists them:
All servers listed comply with the Covenant (https://fedi.garden/about-this-site/) and have opted in to being listed.
Follow the site's account to keep up to date on the latest servers added to the site:
If you want help with moving a Mastodon account to another server, here's a step-by-step guide:

@feditips @FediGarden
I didn’t see https://fosstodon.org among the servers listed under the FOSS topic. Any particular reason, or just an oversight?
Nothing against Fosstodon, I'm just trying to encourage decentralisation by only listing servers with under 50k registered users. Fosstodon has 60k at the moment :)
@moderators @seachanger maybe we could opt the instance into this we fit pretty neatly into the regional category
@feditips @FediGarden @moderators @seachanger
Also looks like we might qualify to get added to the mastadon homepage
It's not me choosing this situation, it's how the Fediverse is.
If you can suggest non-Mastodon servers that comply with the Covenant (https://fedi.garden/about-this-site/) I'd be happy to take a look?
So far vast majority of compliant servers that I can find are running Mastodon or a fork of Mastodon.
Friendica has a particular issue, it still doesn't have a built-in abuse reporting system:
https://github.com/friendica/friendica/issues/8724
(I also did a post on @feditips asking for developers to help Friendica out.)
@matty@social.weyr.org.uk Same with the Reddit-like platforms. Much like @feditips@mstdn.social , I don't care much for Lemmy's devs and wish the software was hard forked away from them, but the threadiverse is definitely now mainstream fediverse with as many people on it as the *key forks. Our #Hajkey microblogging fork at blahaj.zone (which @ada & @supakaity should get listed on @FediGarden@social.growyourown.services since we meet and exceed the criteria) is 1500 users after 10 months, while our Lemmy server sat there for ages dormant and then exploded with the Reddit exodus to 6500 users and now hosts one of the largest queer meme communities on the fediverse. Meanwhile our fedi-informers are still just pumping out "how to use the fediverse" posts out like it's still Mastoverse 2022, and often failing to point out that many of Mastodon's privacy and safety features don't federate well across the other platforms and definitely shouldn't be relied on to do what they say re obscurity & safety.
@feditips @FediGarden Oooh, as a mastodon host, tell me more?
@FediGarden Huh. I think we meet most of these (have to check if our host does daily back-ups). We're a bit of a botique server - for authors and small pubs, esp. LGBTQ+ and spec fic, and folks have to contact me for an invite, so not sure if we meet this one?
"Be open for public registrations, either directly or through sign-up requests"
Is it possible yet to move your whole account?
I won't move again until it is and I find it frustrating when I see "new" accounts where I may be interested in following, but nothing shows up about them because they moved recently and, sadly, haven't written (another) intro.
I'm not sure what you mean by "whole account"? Do you mean moving posts?
That isn't possible (yet), but the link to your profile on old posts will redirect people to your new account.
It will open it in another window, where, for some weird reason, you aren't logged into the Fediverse, so you can't like or comment anything - IF there is a link. I think I have seen that a couple of times, but it is not the rule.
No? If they click on the name on the old post it will taken them to your old profile, which will have a redirect saying you have moved to a new account.
It shouldn't open in another window?
This is on the web interface. Any post given as a URL will open in a new (not-logged-in) window.
I think we mean different things?
I mean the name at the top of a post that someone is browsing from within their own server. It isn't a URL, but a post they have found.
If they click on the name, it takes them to the profile of the author. If the author has moved to another server, there will be a notice redirecting them to the new account on the new server.
