You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.
Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.
On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot
On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

I'm sorry
I wasn't trying to have a go at the developers of the official app, I was struggling to get across the way the official apps were originally pitched when they came out.
@feditips @juliewebgirl I think that genuinely sounds incredible
@feditips
Oh I didn't take it that way at all! We all need the Fisher Price version when starting anything. And let's face it, sometimes I just want pull the FP phone behind me "chinga- chinga-chinga" and pretend to talk to people than deal with all the calls on my real phone. Ditto with apps. Also, dangers of being a designer. "Heyyy *that* would be a fun design!" Everyone else: *facepalm*
@joshbuchea
Okay, good. I didn't want to come across as snarky about anyone.
And I would love to have a working Fisher Price phone
