You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.
Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.
On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot
On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona
@feditips So I should quit Metatext on iPhone? What would I gain (I’m not into programming and such)?
You would gain new features and bug fixes. Apps that aren't maintained can gradually stop working the way they are supposed to, which is why they generally aren't recommended. In a worst case scenario, an unmaintained app may contain unpatched security/privacy problems.
I've no evidence there are security/privacy problems with Metatext by the way, but just warning that this is a general problem on unmaintained apps.
@feditips Well that’s quite clear. Thanks a lot!
I should add, this is a problem mainly on apps that connect to online services.
Entirely offline apps can function well even without updates.
