There are three ways to post GIFs on here:
- Upload a GIF file as an attachment, which works just like attaching an image. On most Mastodon servers the file can be up to 8 megabytes.
OR
- Some mobile apps & keyboards have a built-in GIF picker.
OR
- Post a link to the GIF from an external service like Giphy etc. GIF links will be automatically embedded as the GIF itself.
GIFs may or may not play automatically, depending on the settings of people viewing your post.
Thanks, edited the original post to reflect this
@joshix case and point why I just use Ivory for accessing this place.
@ngorby Ivory is closed source, you don't know what it does
@feditips Genuinely curious, is there a way to see the rest of my folders when uploading a photo from Android? I currently only see default folders such as camera, pictures, downloads. Loving the platform otherwise!
@feditips Asking to see if I'm right:
Posting a link doesn't upload the actual GIF to my instance? And that's better for the instance because it saves storage?
The downsides would be that some apps will only show the link. And the GIF could disappear if the external source fails.
Yup, that's right. It's like posting a link to a video on YouTube.
Another downside is some people will block large corporate-owned external services for privacy reasons, as they tend to track visitors.
@feditips Good to know, I didn't think of that.
Thank you very much!
