Are you still using the official Mastodon app? You don't have to!
There are loads of brilliant third party apps which work with your existing Mastodon account.
Unlike Twitter, Facebook etc, Mastodon uses open standards, which means third party apps can do everything the official apps do and more.
There are links to third party apps on the official Mastodon site, just scroll down past the official ones:
Click on Android, iOS etc to narrow down the app selection.
They would have to contact the Mastodon official website maintainers using the email hello@joinmastodon.org
@feditips I can’t pick just one.
@feditips What are your current favorites for iOS?
Toot! is nice and so is Ice Cubes? But there are also fans of Mona and others!
(EDIT: removed Megalodon as it's Android-only)
@feditips I started using Metatext months ago and like it but it’s now missing important features. I’ll check out the ones you mentioned. Thanks!
Unfortunately Metatext's developer had health issues so they could no longer carry on updating. Hopefully they get better soon
@feditips Hope so!
In the meantime I’ll try the others. Thanks! Megalodon seems to be Android only.
Ahh yeah, you're right, sorry!
@feditips https://phanpy.social/ doesn't have an app but looks great on mobile. After the latest update, the offical app isn't awful.
In this case, the apps use the #Mastodon #Client #API.
This is more or less also adapted by other #Fediverse #software.
It's documented in an open way, but is not really an open standard.
Regarding the open standard #ActivityPub, the server-to-server part is used, but not the client-to-server part.
All fair points, thank you!
@feditips I have been testing a few. Toot!, Ivory and Ice Cubes are my current apps. I will take a look at a few of the other ones too!
@feditips I use #Megalodon on #mobile and the web interface on #desktop.
@feditips
Or just use your browser
@feditips After your toot, I started using Tuba for GNOME!
@feditips Is there a roadmap for development on the official Mastodon app (Android in particular)? I really like the UI on it but it is missing some key features that Tusky has
Yes, there's a roadmap for Mastodon and its official apps at https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap
Bear in mind you need to view this on a horizontal screen to see which parts of the map apply to which elements. On the horizontal version, Android app sections will be labelled "AND", iOS is "iOS" and core Mastodon is "MAS". On the vertical version these labels are hidden, unfortunately.
@feditips I probably could have not been lazy and Googled that and gotten an answer! But I appreciate you taking the time to give me that info, and all the work you're doing with the Tips gig here. It's a valuable contribution and you're appreciated.
@feditips try Focus for Mastodon
