Finding a server to move to is easier than most people realise.
There are human-curated lists of servers at https://fedi.garden and https://joinmastodon.org/servers
All these listed servers promise to obey these rules:
-Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia
-Daily backups
-Two or more people with admin access
-3 months warning if they are shutting down
You can keep your followers, follows, blocks, mutes and bookmarks when you move. Here's how: https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/
p.s. If you want to see the about page of a server's mobile website, click on the ⋯ button on the right of the screen.
If you're looking at the desktop website it will be a button labelled "Learn more" on the left of the screen.
Both of these take you to the server's About page, which has a description of the server, its rules, a list of blocked servers and the public contact email of the server's admin.
@feditips I wish you could tell this to everyone in mastodon.social
@feditips How is "Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia" determined?
@feditips And if you are an academic, check out servers listed on “Academics on Mastodon”: https://nathanlesage.github.io/academics-on-mastodon/
@feditips Could https://fedi.garden/ prominently show the instance size, max post length and any special characteristics like post length or moderation specifics?
You can see instance info including those by clicking on the instance's link.
I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible on my sites.
@feditips Also, what do you think of promoting the idea of people creating a MASTODON ALT on another instance as an option to MOVING? Moving is a pretty major decision, whereas creating a Mastodon Alt (MALT?) account may be a good way to "try before you buy." Curious about your reaction to this?
@mastodonmigration @feditips I guess I assumed this would be the normal thing to do? If I'm looking for a small instance with a good local feed, seems the easiest to do
Alts are fine, and yeah that would be a good way of trying out different servers too.
@feditips @mastodonmigration i started on a small, general instance. And made MALTs (i endorse this term) on 3 or 4 other instances before my current.
@feditips Moving servers can also be an opportunity to find a new 'home' in the Fediverse that better meets your needs and wants. Like, cyber.space closed down so I ended up here at @oldbytes.space with this utterly delightful group of old computer putterers :)
@feditips Works as advertised!
If you're on a mobile device be sure to first click the (...) 3 little dots above a toot, which opens a menu with the option to "open in a browser."
In the BROWSER, the 3 little dots (...) on the right when clicked reveal the server info that fedi.tips is telling us about.
Thank YOU @feditips!
@feditips
Mine (desktop web site) is on the bottom-left of the screen and just say "About."
@feditips I am so confused why everyone acts like moving servers is as difficult as moving to another neighborhood.
