The Fediverse has its own video platform called @peertube.
You can follow PeerTube accounts from Mastodon, for example try following @craftykat
You can watch and interact with the videos entirely within Mastodon, or on PeerTube itself.
Here's an example of a PeerTube server:
If you see an account you like, you can copy and paste its account address into Mastodon to follow it there. When new videos are published, they will appear in your Mastodon timeline.
@feditips @peertube @craftykat which is the podcast platform?
@enganhifa @feditips @peertube @craftykat
There are many #podcast platforms I recall.
But I only know about #Castopod , and #Funkwhale (which is more about music than podcast).
@feditips @peertube @craftykat i have been here for a while and didnt know that, thanks
@feditips @peertube @craftykat
I need to establish on this! I've got all of our long COVID town halls on YouTube but this is a better idea.
@feditips @peertube @craftykat Could anyone share an example of a video you can watch "entirely in Mastodon"? Does it appear embedded in a post? Can it be played without any sort of registration on PeerTube?
@JPEGuin For some reason, tapping on the peertube and craftykats links in this toot don’t do anything in Mammoth.
@feditips @peertube @craftykat @RedBoots try this for videos?
@feditips @CommodoreBlog One you might like?
@feditips @peertube @craftykat what happens if peertube shuts down? Will the other hosts still able to access the video hosted on it?
@feditips @peertube @craftykat thanks for this post. I’d been hearing the term but been too lazy (or maybe too busy if I’m being an optimist) to look it up.
@feditips @peertube @craftykat Arriving new here at #mastodon, reading a lot about #decentWeb actually working and at work... makes me happy, "Mr Sink" may have inadvertedly "boosted" the decentralised Web, fingers crossed
@feditips we need that copy box on every activitypub based service. It is so handy.
@NafiTheBear @feditips There's a Firefox addon for that that makes it one-click, I think.
@islamicaudiobooks @feditips I'm running most activity pub services in tangram or on my mobile phone, but thank you.
@feditips what does this mean for the other way around? How does Peertube handle the replys from our timelines? Are Mastodon videos viewable through peertube? Is there a way to link a mastodon account to a peertube account?
@feditips is it possible to follow mastodon accounts from peertube?
@feditips @peertube @craftykat
is this normal behavior? it happens when i follow peertube account
@muznyo Accounts can require manually approving follows. You can do that on mastodon too:
In the web app: Preferences > Profile > Require follow requests
@feditips @peertube @craftykat
Yes. And if you are hoping to post a lot of video you should totally use Peertube instead of Mastodon.
Hosting video is really expensive for the host and hard on the servers.
Peertube shares the bandwidth between the people watching in a peer to peer bit-torrent-ish way. Making the server resources needed quite a lot lower.
I started my own Peertube instance separately to my Mastodon instance because of that.
It's a massive cost-saving for hosting video, and the savings are bigger the more popular it is.
@feditips @peertube @craftykat how deep does this little rabbit hole go?! Is there a list, somewhere, for the new folk that outlines all the apps associated with #Mastodon - it there is and you could point me there, I’d be very thankful. This place just keeps getting better!
@seventyninexons @feditips
Per Axbom ( @axbom ) made a neat overview of the different fediverse associated platforms (and related federated systems). He has links to the different platforms on his website:
https://axbom.com/fediverse/
@johannes_lehmann @feditips @axbom that’s awesome. Thanks heaps.
@daireshaw
These are various platforms connecting via the federated system: if Mastodon is Twitter, the others are the Fediverse YouTube, Facebook, Instagram…
The cool thing is that if you follow e.g. a Peertube (videos) or a Pixelfed (photos) account via your Mastodon their posts show up in your home timeline. See thread I replied to for an example (from Ireland even).
PS. You can set your replies to “unlisted” via the menu if you don’t want to broadcast them into the federated timeline.
@seventyninexons @feditips @peertube @craftykat Mobilizon is cool and promising as well
@seventyninexons Wikipedia has a list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#Fediverse_software_platforms
All the ones with ActivityPub probably have some sort of interoperability, I think?
@feditips @craftykat @peertube I need to leave Mastodon on iOS to watch these videos.
@peertube @craftykat @feditips @carstenjaksch
it just opens in the in-app, the same as YouTube, which is alright lol
@carstenjaksch @feditips @craftykat @peertube same with Tusky on Android. Apps always seem to be behind what the website is capable of. And even website capability is dependent on which version your admin has installed.
