Some Fediverse alternatives to "big tech" social media:

Twitter ➡️ @Mastodon

Instagram ➡️ @pixelfed

YouTube ➡️ @peertube

Twitch ➡️ @owncast

Goodreads ➡️ @bookwyrm

Facebook Groups ➡️ @mobilizon

Medium ➡️ @writefreely

You don't need an account on all of these in order to interact with them.

Because they all use the ActivityPub open protocol, you can (for example) use a Mastodon account to follow someone on PixelFed or vice versa. That's why they are collectively known as the Fediverse, because they federate together at a technical level.

Also, this is an incomplete list, there are many other Fedi projects out there such as @funkwhale or @inventaire that are not direct alternatives but are their own thing.

@mobilizon is an alternative to Facebook Events, not Facebook Groups I'd like to add for Discord and a bit of a hot take, Misskey is better than Mastodon for people switching over from Twitter.

@thatonecalculator @revoltchat @feditips Revolt isn't in the Fediverse. Matrix would be a better comparison since it's at least federated, although in its own network. The dev / beta also got voice channels now. Fosscord is a work-in-progress 1:1 reimplementation of the Discord API and user interface while Revolt is Discord-like but remaking things in its own way.

@feditips great list. One more though:

Reddit ➡️ @LemmyDev

There are many Lemmy instances these days (here's an anarchist-leaning Polish instance, @szmer ), and they federate: for example, one can follow the Solarpunk community on Szmer by following @solarpunk.

Gotta say I am pretty excited about Lemmy joining fedi.

For the record, there are issues with Lemmy's dev team, which had been discussed many a time on fedi already. One of the main instances, Lemmygrad, is very clearly a tankie instance.

Szmer does not federate with Lemmygrad, and many other Lemmy instances made the same call, apparently.

So, as always, do your research, make up your own mind, and choose your tools accordingly. I would be a very happy camper if Lemmy got forked.

@rysiek would you recommend any English speaking lemmy instances that maybe don't block lemmygrad but don't bow down to the tankies?

@eris not really. I am active on the Polish instance, which started fully federating only recently. So I have not seen many other instances yet. I'm sure they're there, though.

@eris @rysiek Possibly the main instance might be what you are looking for.

Mobilizon as a substitute for FB? The site says specifically it's not a social media platform. Is it not more for organizing events? Please clarify ...

Sorry, my mistake, I should have said Facebook Events instead of Facebook Groups on the original list.

Mobilizon was made to help people get event organising off Facebook.

Shame. Facebook groups is a holy grail for the fediverse. The best I found was Guppe groups and no one uses it enough:
Gotcha. I was puzzled. That makes sense. I didn't realize FB has a thing called Events. Been off of it for a while now.
@feditips as others have pointed out it'd be nice to see this account give attention to misskey and pleroma and other types of fedi software that isn't just Mastodon

@feditips Creating one account per server is probably unavoidable, but are there proposals to allow multiple accounts to share a single identity from the point of view of other users?

Twitter: Mastodon & Pleroma
Facebook: Friendica

@vahid @feditips
Other than #Friendica, one could also add #Hubzilla, #Zap, #Misty and its other successors to the list of #Facebook alternatives in the #Fediverse. The main caveat may be that #ActivityPub has to be activated both on the instance and again per account because they all mainly use #Zot instead.

@MartinG it still mystery to me how to activate ActivityPub on Hubzilla. I can't find any information anywhere on how to do it. In that sense I don't think Hubzilla can be really considered part of Fediverse - main dev also do not recommed to activate ActivityPub because it will break Hubzilla functions.

@fisunov It's one of the apps which has to be activated (under Apps).

If you don't have that app in your list of available apps, you may be on a #Hubzilla hub where #ActivityPub support has deliberately been disabled hub-wide by the admins.

The Hubzilla function that will be broken by using any protocol other than #Zot is the nomadic identity, i.e. easily moving from one hub to another and running the same channel on multiple hubs. If you don't need that, go for ActivityPub.

@MartinG well yes I don't have that app in my list of available apps, but it seems like I'm only one who can't be followed from Mastodon because I tried to follow other people from the same Hubzilla instance ( from my Mastodon account and there was no problems finding and following them.

@otwartezrodlo Glad that you liked it. Please spread and if you find any errors or want to add anything, you can tell me.

Diaspora isn't compatible with most Fediverse platforms, because it doesn't use ActivityPub.

For this and other reasons, I wouldn't advise using Diaspora.

A better option is Friendica, which is compatible with both ActivityPub and Diaspora.

hallo @KaSa 👋😀

* Mir ist leider kein guter, deutscher Begriff dafür bekannt.

@KaSa Erklärung zum Tone Policing:

@gcrkrause @KaSa

@feditips @Mastodon @pixelfed
Can you recommend an Android app for pixelfed? I have tried some of the standard Mastodon apps, but I haven't found a good one for pixelfed. I'm looking for an app that has the same feeling as standard Instagram, nothing special.

@Ronald @Mastodon @pixelfed

If you're comfortable with using F-Droid (an alternative app store that only carries free open source software), there's an app called PixelDroid. They're also on here at @PixelDroid

However, the official PixelFed apps are still in development and haven't been released yet. I don't know when they will be available.

Did Diaspora die off? Heard about it as a Facebook-ish fedi service, several years ago

Diaspora history, suicide mention

One of Diaspora's original developers sadly took his own life in 2011 just when the platform was really taking off. This was a huge blow, and (as far as I can tell) the project never really recovered from the tragedy. The other original developers eventually moved onto other projects, and handed Diaspora over to the community.

Diaspora's current development team doesn't want to use the ActivityPub standard, which almost all other Fediverse users are on. This means there is no way for Diaspora users to talk to Fedi users on Mastodon, PixelFed, PeerTube etc etc etc.

Diaspora's development seems to have almost dried up, and the number of active users on the Diaspora network today is only a few thousand.

It's a very sad situation 😟 and it's a major loss for the wider Fediverse.
