The Fediverse is more than just Mastodon!
If you like to share photos you might want to check out @pixelfed, an Instagram-style photo sharing network on the Fediverse.
You can find out more and sign up at:
https://pixelfed.org
PixelFed uses the same federation protocol as Mastodon, which means Mastodon users can follow people on PixelFed and vice versa. You can try following a PixelFed account right now such as @Iancylkowski or @JoseMel or @connyduck
You can use PixelFed through a web browser, and there are also free open Android apps like @PixelDroid and FediLab (@apps).
If you love books, the best part of the Fediverse is probably @bookwyrm, a GoodReads-style social reading network.
More info and sites to sign up on are at:
Because it uses the same ActivityPub protocol that powers the rest of the Fediverse, you can follow BookWyrm accounts from Mastodon etc.
For example, the lead developer of BookWyrm has an account at @mouse
#Fediverse #FediTips #BookWyrm #Books #Book #Literature #Novels #Fiction #NonFiction #Reading #GoodReads #Alternatives
p.s. You can also find more BookWyrm instances listed at https://fedidb.org/software/bookwyrm
p.s. You can see interesting videos from PeerTube recommended on my other account at @FediVideos
If you just want to post long text articles on the Fediverse, a good option is @writefreely which has an official website at:
It features a minimalist interface to avoid distracting from the text itself, and is sort of like a Fediverse alternative to Medium.
Because it's part of the Fediverse, you can follow WriteFreely accounts from Mastodon etc.
You can find sites to sign up on at:
https://writefreely.org/instances
It works entirely through your web browser, or you can use an app from https://writefreely.org/apps
You can also create your own instance without technical knowledge through a managed hosting service such https://writefreely.host or https://cloud68.co/instances.html
If you have a blog powered by WordPress, you can connect it to the Fediverse so that people on Mastodon etc can follow your blog, comment on posts and share them.
You will need to install a free open source plugin called ActivityPub For WordPress:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub
Note that WordPress the platform is different from wordpress.com the hosting site. Wordpress.com does not allow installation of this kind of plugin (unless you pay an expensive fee).
But you don't need to use wordpress.com to use WordPress! Because WordPress is free open source software, much every hosting provider in the world offers a WordPress site for a few dollars a month, and this kind of indpendently hosted WordPress is what the plugin will work on.
The Fediverse has a platform dedicated to storing and sharing music and podcasts called @funkwhale. You can find out more including how to join at:
There's also a demo instance at:
Because Funkwhale is part of the Fediverse, you can follow its accounts from Mastodon etc. For example, the account @bytebitmusic_chiptunes is on Funkwhale.
Funkwhale is compatible with many different apps including those using the Subsonic standard. There's a list at https://funkwhale.audio/en_US/apps
You can create your own Funkwhale instance without any tech knowledge using managed hosting services such as https://cloud68.co/instances/funkwhale or https://weingaertner-it.de/index.php/produkt-kategorie/funkwhale-hosting

You can organise events and groups on the Fediverse using @mobilizon, a free open source federated events platform from the makers of PeerTube. More info on the official website at:
There's also a list of recommended instances to sign up on at:
If you just want to try it out, there's a test site at https://demo.mobilizon.org which is reset every 24 hours.
You can follow Mobilizon accounts from Mastodon etc. For example, @radio27 is a Mobilizon account that recommends psychedelic rock concerts in Berlin.
Alternatively, Mobilizon accounts can also be followed through RSS/Atom or ICS/WebCal if preferred.

@feditips @fdroidorg @news Is it a unnavigable mess like fb?
@Mek101
Keep in mind I haven’t used FB in over 5 years, but no it’s organized similar to other ActivityPub platforms, just with a more macro-blog feel. Home timeline, local timeline, federated timeline function pretty much the same. The interface will likely feel dated compared to FB, but if you can navigate Mastodon you can navigate Friendica.
@feditips @fdroidorg @news
@feditips @writefreely really nice platform, I recently created a blog using that project. It's at https://wordsmith.social/aerkiaga/
@feditips @writefreely
Does it support RSS so I can subscribe without authentication/tracking?
Yes, you can subscribe via RSS using the URL of the blog:
@feditips
I used this and suddenly all my post are gone, see https://blogs.b86.org/bildbeschreibung/
Is there a list of instances that are not likely to get this problem, @writefreely ?
@feditips Just upgraded our organisation's WP site with the ActivityPub plugin... not sure how to tell if it's working :)
If you're having problems with the plugin, maybe the developer @pfefferle might be able to help?
@feditips @pfefferle to be fair, I haven't spent much time looking into it, but I have enabled the ActivityPub plugin on https://oerfoundation.org - perhaps one of you can tell me if it's working :) (and how to check it)... or I'll have a closer look at the plugin docs when I get a minute 😅
@lightweight @feditips @pfefferle seems to be OK. I can (from mastodon and friendica) find posts by url and follow author.
@miklo @feditips @pfefferle cool :) - yeah, just managed to follow myself and my colleague there (and on https://coep.nz)...
@miklo @feditips @pfefferle how do you find posts via Mastodon?
@lightweight @feditips @pfefferle "Find" box in web interface (top left corner)
@lightweight @feditips @pfefferle Also put test comment : https://fosstodon.org/@miklo/107641069069899205
@lightweight @feditips @pfefferle Comment is visible from mastodon but not on you site. maybe some correction in page template are needed.
@miklo @feditips @pfefferle indeed - will have a look. Very interesting.
@lightweight @miklo @pfefferle
If you search for https://oerfoundation.org/author/mackiwg/ within Mastodon, it will bring up that user's profile and post.
If you can't see any posts, try searching for the URL of a post instead of the URL of the user. For example, try searching for https://oerfoundation.org/2021/11/03/french-adaptation-of-oeru-course-builds-technical-capability-for-oer-capacity-development-in-multiple-languages/
@feditips Currently I use "Mastodon Autopost" (https://de.wordpress.org/plugins/autopost-to-mastodon/), but the idea to forward to any federative sites is quite intersting!
and
@feditips if users do not want or know to deal with those plugins...
we can still use IFTTT to make a "web quest" with the "Fedi" APIs 😊
@feditips @mobilizon @radio27 I love how you promote the more "niche" parts of the #Fediverse! It's always super cool to see platforms that I've never heard of!
@feditips @mobilizon @radio27 More specifically, Fediverse platforms I've never heard of.
@feditips Thank you for mentioning @radio27 😃 🎉
I just want to clarify one thing: On Mobilizon there are accounts and groups. Mobilizon brings into focus the communities, not so much the individual accounts. @radio27 for example is a group. You can follow groups, but not accounts.
This may sound a bit counterintuitive at first, but I love how @mobilizon tries to "reinvent" social media and not just copies or clones "Big Tech". 🖤
Thanks for the clarification! I'll say that people can follow Mobilizon addresses next time.
@feditips @mobilizon @radio27 I set up a Mobilizon instance a month or two ago. Works great, only took a few minutes (via Docker) on a cloud computing instance. Works great!
@feditips thanks a ton!
@feditips given how fast blogs die, this should be included by default to reach at least some kind of visibility right off the start.
@feditips @writefreely Are you able to search for writefreely blogs? Because it's hard to discover them and I don't know if I'm missing something?
You can search for them the same way you would search for any Fediverse account.
If you would like a more Facebook-style interface on the Fediverse, maybe you should try Friendica:
https://friendi.ca
As it uses the ActivityPub protocol, you can follow and interact with accounts on Mastodon etc from Friendica, and vice versa.
You can also follow RSS feeds as if they were Fediverse accounts, and when an RSS item is published on that feed it will appear in your timeline as if it's a Fediverse post.
You can write very long posts on Friendica, you don't have to worry about character limits.
You can use Friendica accounts through the FediLab app, available on @fdroidorg and Google Play.
You can follow the latest news about Friendica on its official blog at @news
