If you want to keep maximum control over who can see your posts on Mastodon, do both of these:

1. Set your default post visibility to "followers-only" by going to Preferences > Other > Posting Privacy > Followers-Only and then click "Save Changes"

2. Switch on follow requests by going to Edit Profile > Require Follow Requests and click "Save Changes"

These two things together mean by default your Mastodon posts from then on will only be visible to people you have actively approved as your followers.

(You can still publish public posts with these settings, but you will have to change a post's own privacy setting to public.)

(Also note this doesn't apply retroactively, public posts you've already made in the past will still be public.)
