Every instance on the Fediverse has its own set of rules written by the people who run that instance.
If you disagree with them, you can move to another instance with different rules.
This is how the Fediverse differs from centralised social media such as Twitter/Facebook/IG, there is no single group or person with power over everyone.
On Mastodon, you can see your instance rules by clicking on the "About this server" link in the bottom left.
@feditips If you don't like any of the rules anywhere, set your own server up and take responsibility for the security, safety and financial support of the server.
@zleap @feditips "anyone can setup a server" is false information. Less tech inclined users are definitely not able to setup a server and misleading informations like this damage the Fediverse reputation, because it leads to highly frustrated non-users. Been there, done that, got no shirt. Personally I think that "everyone can setup a server" is a highly arrogant attitude.
If you use managed hosting, anyone can set up a server, because the managed hosting service handles all the technical stuff.
Services like https://masto.host don't have a technical barrier.
Also, could you please be less inflammatory in your replies? Accusing others of arrogance and spreading false information in your very first post of someone else's thread is not helping to foster a friendly atmosphere.
@feditips @zleap I spoke from personal experience with mutliple developers from multiple Fediverse applications and I did not even mention conrete names, even if I could have. I encountered a very hostile "atmosphere" attitude from multiple Fediverse-related projects after simly reporting bugs in a neutral and technical manner. So I really cannot understand how you can accuse me of something like that when I'm just stating facts.
To go with the Masto.host example, here's their pricing for managed hosting of a Mastodon instance:
Smallest package is 6 euros a month for 5 active users. That's 1.2 euros per user per month.
Largest package is 89 euros a month for 2000 active users. That's 0.04 euros per user per month.
I wouldn't call that "grossly overpriced".
