BBC Article on Danny Boyle's soon to come out The Matrix: The Musical!

"When he watched The Matrix when it came out in 1999, (Danny) Boyle admits some of its themes went over his head.

"I loved it," he says. "I was a bit baffled, to be honest, and it's kind of swum into view - it's got clearer and clearer in the 20-odd years since it came out.

"You think, 'Oh my God, it's quite accurate, really, what it's talking about.'""

Oh boy, cant wait to scroll down and read how much he doesnt get the movie.

Matrix! The Musical:
Have you ever thought maybe like you know we're already in the Matrix? Look around you man, open your eyes, are we in charge of technology or is technology in charge of us?!

the first bit where they literally quote Wachowski laying out what her film is about, i was like oh shit wait Mr Boyle is actually going to make a giant theatre show about the transgender experience loosely wrapped in a sci fi metaphor?

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my favourite films.

Frankenstein is probably the most expensive theatre show ive seen that i disliked.

This all feels too on the nose that a cis guys making a matrix show and thinks its actually even remotely about AI.

Danny its about coming out as Transgender and how people breaking that gender boundary gives rise to Fascism because of society's need for comfort outweighing the value of trans life.

@siege from interviews with the wachowski’s i am not entirely sure they were entirely aware the film was about being transgender while they were making it. I get the impression they didn’t realise until it was pointed out and they went “oh shit. it is, isn’t it? oops.”

but, yeah, it definitely is. Abstractly they told themselves it was about Jean Baudrillard and his line about the map preceding the territory- the arbitrary categories capitalism places on a nature that defies and resists categorisation,

but that’s definitely trans themes

Danielle

@bri_seven @siege well, I mean you write what you know, and that tends to be trans metaphor without realizing it if you're trans and don't realize it

I know that once I finally came out as trans, I looked over all the things I've written over the years (particularly NaNoWriMo stories where I'm just freewriting without stopping to think) and it all REEKED of trans metaphors

AND, since I write science fantasy, there's a lot of Matrix influence in turn, no less!

@exelia_antonov @bri_seven oh no im pretty sure the Wachowskis knew they were trans when they wrote and produced the matrix. They just werent out publicly. It was a loosely kept secret in Hollywood.

"The Matrix stuff was all about the desire for transformation but it was all coming from a closeted point of view.
"We had the character of Switch - who was a character who would be a man in the real world and then a woman in the Matrix."
Lilly doesn't know "how present my transness was in the background of my brain as we were writing" The Matrix.
"But it all came from the same sort of fire that I'm talking about."
She was always drawn to science fiction because "we were existing in a space where the words didn't exist, so we were always living in a world of imagination".

@siege @exelia_antonov
so i guess there’s still room for interpretation here, but they seem to be indicating here, in essence that while The Matrix was definitely meant to be a trans allegory from the start, at least for that one character—- their eggs had not cracked yet

Lilly Wachowski accepts an award
www.bbc.comThe Matrix is a 'trans metaphor', Lilly Wachowski saysLilly Wachowski, who came out as trans in 2016, says the "world wasn't quite ready" in 1999.

@bri_seven @exelia_antonov well at least that they were writing it while closeted - not out, rumours were already out by the second film that they were trans so i guess thats a personal vagueness.

@siege @exelia_antonov it’s not unusual for other people to realise before we do

@siege @exelia_antonov so like, also, The Matrix was filmed in Sydney, one of the most trans / queer accepting places in the world.

It is known that the directors and entire cast were hanging out in… well, not gay clubs but inclusive clubs. lots of opportunities for trans folks here (i am in Sydney) to recognise their own.

we know they were there because scenes were filmed in those places

@siege @exelia_antonov it’s annoying also because pandemic killed those all inclusive clubs, along with increasingly lgbt and sex worker hostile civic policies
