Got running in a VM on Apple Silicon. My first time running it although I’ve used on and off for years. Figuring out the differences in package managers, etc now.

@dry What VM software do you use on Apple Silicon? I got a M1MBP but still haven't gotten around to trying virtualization.

@jamesrylandmiller I’m using parallels, not normally my first choice, but i need a windows vm for some stuff and they seem to run better there on the M2. FreeBSD will only run at 1024x768 and I’ve only done a quick laugh test with OpenBSD so I don’t know how well it’ll do yet. FreeBSD gets much better resolution on Intel sadly.

@dry thanks for the info. I had an old license of parallels from 2011ish. I wonder if I could upgrade it to modern for reduced price? Have you tried any Linux VMs on apple silicon? I used to use FreeBSD for a server and openbsd for a router but not as a desktop.

@jamesrylandmiller I’ve had no problem with most distros: red hat, Ubuntu, fedora, centos, Debian, and Suse all worked fine. Arch doesnt seem ready yet however.

@dry A long time ago I spent a lot of time on Arch. Even dailied it for desktop. That was back when it still used rc.conf and had a lot of FreeBSD influence from Judd Vinet. IMO it actually got less usable over time not more so. I will probably go back to Debian or attempt to learn Nixos.
