I has a conversation with my sister over the weekend and pretty much said the same to her.
Pretty certain that the folks who have weaponized socials have known this since the earliest days of twitter. It's not that different than a soundbite, but it's more immediate.

the open web doesn't have fact checking. it's ok. in fact, it's healthy. consider fact checking claims re WMDs in the run-up to Iraq. our govt said they had them and most news outlets believed them. so are we saying that people questioning that claim should be censored if the conversation was happening on social media today? that's why I'm not big on moderation here for misinfo or even serious disagreements. imo they should focus on harassment. unwanted tagging.
