The idiom “dog’s life” is a expression that refers to a difficult, unpleasant, or unhappy existence..
But dogs that I saw out enjoying walks today seemed oblivious to how stressed and angry they should be with everything that's going on in the world.
I'm envious to be honest.

Mine ate better than me or Dad* and got away with everything.
Dad felt happier with me on sticks (long story) having our GSD guarding me on rambles in the woods.
Then again, bar the usual smelly obsessions, she wasn't particularly doglike.
She didn't even howl at the moon until I showed her how.
Yes me, Dad & dog all howling - quite a sight & sound.
Actually she was very quiet generally and not attention seeking.
Also she disliked other dogs and was sniffy about most people to be honest - excellent judge of character.
Dogs react to how they're treated & don't care who / what someone is, only how they behave toward them.
I'm a lot like that actually.
