We have to make sure Trump does not get a second term. But that does not end the clear & present threat to Democracy.
A large swath of the Republican apparatus has proven that they are not only willing to let a strongman push them around, but they are actually proactively complicit. "Project 2025" is, explicitly, a roadmap to autocracy and it is being pursued actively right now. A willing president is just the capstone.
There is no path back to normalcy for the Republican party.
The only thing that will rewind the doomsday clock is the implosion of the Republican party and replacement with something new that is committed to the democratic process, even at the occasional expense of their own power.
@cammerman Exactly this. We need to get rid of Trump because he's the foot that's preventing the U.S. from slamming the door on fascism, but ultimately it's not the foot we need to be afraid of; it's the 300-lb thug the foot's attached to (the Christian nationalists and would-be oligarchs who see Trump as their long-desired chance to end the American Experiment).
@msbellows @cammerman "Would-be" oligarchs?
Like the US hasn't been an oligarchy since at least 1945?
@NickSchwanck @cammerman I don't think they're at full "oligarch" status yet, because the little guy sometimes still wins.
@msbellows @cammerman I believe that is the illusion of Democracy.
Regards.
@cammerman Why do people on the right so often end up being against other people being right too?
And all the barking about rights!?!? They don't have any to spare fog anyone else, do they?
They need better marketers if they want my vote.
"Fascists." That tests well with the focus groups. New name, different branding.
