If you have an independently hosted WordPress blog, you can turn it into a Fediverse server by installing the WordPress ActivityPub plugin. This means people can follow your blog from Mastodon etc.
Here's how to do it:
1. Go to your WordPress dashboard's Plugins section, click "add new" and search for "ActivityPub" . Click "install now" on the plugin, and when it has finished installing, click "activate".
2. On the WordPress dashboard, go to the "Users" section. Click on your username and scroll to the bottom to find your Fediverse address. Share this address with whoever wants to follow your blog on Mastodon etc.
3. To alter the plugin's settings, on your WordPress dashboard go to Settings > ActivityPub
If you want to switch off or remove the plugin, go to "plugins", then "deactivate" or "delete".
NOTE: This plugin only works with independently hosted WordPress sites. It doesn't work with free accounts on WordPress.com.
Some random tips for people running their own #Mastodon server:
-When blocking, you only need to block the main domain (e.g. example.com). All subdomains are automatically included in the block (e.g. subdomain.example.com).
-When making custom emoji, remember to include alt text with CamelCase so that blind people can understand them through screen readers.
-If you want to run a server totally separate from the Fediverse, there are some hints and tips by @wiligl at https://biosphere.wilmarigl.de/en/?p=3171
Something a bit different today...
There's a really nice Fediverse admin on here called @stux who provides lots of free decentralised public services (public instances of Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Matrix, Nitter, Invidious, Searx etc).
Stux is spending hundreds of euros a month so that these services remain free and operational.
Apparently Stux has had a tough time finding work recently, but has their own small business which provides web hosting.
If you're looking for a small indie hosting provider, this might be a really good choice as the money raised will help keep the Fedi going too:
(I'm sorry to embarass you Stux, but I think you deserve a shout-out for the good work you do!)
It is incredibly refreshing to hear two progressive comics analyze the right-wing influence on modern comedy.

I suspect it is not just Chemistry textbooks that suffer from this issue.
This is one area where open textbooks & #OER can make a huge difference. Open licenses mean these types of representation issues can be addressed by educators to meet the specific EDI requirements of their regional student population https://cen.acs.org/education/undergraduate-education/Chemistry-textbooks-still-lack-gender/99/i14
PSA, maybe? I am off blood thinners for a few days before a procedure, and I just read about a lawsuit against Plavix/Clopidrogel from some time ago, but this is what I gleaned:
If you're on Plavix/Clop and you hit your head, go to the hospital. You have real risk of brain bleed

Looking forward to 2022 World Bike Day tomorrow.🚲

When you're posting hashtags that contain multiple words, it's a good idea to capitalise the first letter of each word. This helps blind people who use screen reader software to know what the hashtag actually says.
For example #DogsOfMastodon is much easier for screen reader users than #dogsofmastodon, even though they're technically the same tag.
This kind of capitalisation is usually known as "CamelCase". CamelCase doesn't just help blind people, it also makes hashtags clearer for sighted people too!
Using CamelCase won't affect your post's visibility (because searches ignore capitalisation) but it will improve the post's accessibility, so you'll get more people reading it.
Thank you to @martyn for raising this topic 👍
Saving one #dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever!♥️

Just negioated my highest wage I've ever been paid in hospitality.
The more of us who refuse to except the bottom-line and bargain in good faith for higher wages, the more we can push wages up in our industry.

"The copyright industry’s success in obtaining a DMCA takedown process that is so easy to abuse, especially to silence voices and censor material, means that true and important information can be removed from the Web fraudulently and unjustifiably." - https://www.techdirt.com/2022/05/24/copyright-as-censorship-abuse-of-the-dmca-to-try-to-delete-online-news-is-rampant/ @qco

@pluralistic another example: my spouse is a radiologist. AI/ML is being used in all sorts of applications because of its pattern recognition power. So they did a study for breast cancer detection.
And found out the AI was perfect at detecting ... cancer? Pre-cancerous cells? Nope.
100% of the time, the algorithm detected which company manufactured the scanner.

Hey I've joined Twitter to talk about the rise of fascism in religious homeschooling circles and to speak about my experiences being raised in those circles, it's not just an American thing, it's here in New Zealand and it has been for a long time.
