So I am torn 1) as trained entomologist (previous life) I love having these eggs from the Large White (Pieris rapae) 2) they are on my 1st attempt of growing brussel sprouts

Think I will end up keeping them and taking loads more photos as they develop

Before anyone says, yes I had them under cover but they grew and burst through the netting that I had down

Day 2 of noticing that I had Large white eggs on my Brussel Sprouts, we now have a few caterpillars emerging

Got my Unilock tripod out of the loft to assist in the photo documenting. Might try some stacking of images later.

10 Large white caterpillars moving away from their egg cluster from which they just emerged. Still more to emerge too. Not sure my Brussel sprout plants will survive this onslaught

So 10 became over 30 Large white caterpillars and counting 😱

So a bad / good news post regarding the documenting of the Large White caterpillars

The UK wet summer continues, even under netting a vast amount of water hit the Brussel sprouts.

Bad news: All the caterpillars from the egg cluster of yesterday have disappeared. Unfortunately that's nature, its delicate and is always hanging in the balance.

Good news: I went hunting and I have found 3 further clusters that all emerged this morning and all on the same leaf!

A gap in the rain and I have decided to sacrifice my Brussel sprout crop. Removed the nets from the few remaining plants being protected and within minutes there were 3 female large whites on them.

And the previous caterpillars found this morning are still doing fine. So many of them now, they all reacted to the movement/light as I needed to move the leaf slightly flatter to photograph.

On a different leaf of the Brussel sprouts was this amazing bead of water.

Catching up on the Large white butterfly eggs and caterpillars on the Brussel sprouts.
New eggs and some new caterpillars found. I believe the Song Thrush that I have nesting in an ivy bush in the garden, has discovered this food source as is often darting in and out of the allotment area.

We have some day 2 Large white caterpillars that survived the horrid day of rain yesterday

I can see you ....trying to be a bit arty with this catch-up of the Large white caterpillars. Looking through a hole in the leaf that the caterpillars have created
