Lawsuit: Apple paid women less than men, rewarded men in perf evals for teamwork & leadership but penalized women. Apple also compensated individuals who have 'talent' more highly but more often rewarded male talent while female talent went unacknowledged.arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20

Ars Technica · Apple punishes women for same behaviors that get men promoted, lawsuit saysApple could owe thousands in back pay to 12,000 female employees.

@amydiehl

What always makes me shake my head in disbelief about things like this is that, as a trillion-dollar company, they can easily afford to behave ethically and pay everyone properly and avoid lawsuits and bad PR and still be a trillion-dollar company. And yet…

@Mikal @amydiehl that's such an interesting conversation starting point. Since you can tell it's not really about money, you have to ask the question why this is still happening? What other 'need' is being served or idea is expressed by through this kind of carry on?

@Mikal @amydiehl I mean, it’s pretty easy to square that rectangle that the company currently winning capitalism got and stays there by not paying all that it owes and prioritizing profits over the chance of catching some (relatively) minor PR issues/legal fees.

What’s important is that if it were purely economics in charge, the women whose work produces more capital would succeed the men producing less. But it’s not because its behooves men to maintain their power.

@WhiteCatTamer @amydiehl

Yeah, I was implying as much. Patriarchy is a helluva drug.

@Mikal @amydiehl If they’d been ethical, they would never have allowed themselves to become a trillion-dollar company. The kind of culture you need to become a trillion-dollar company is the kind of culture where shit like this happens. It’s like looking at the monarchy and asking “why are they decadent?” Because monarchy is inherently decadent. Similarly, trillion-dollar corporations are inherently unequal, unjust, unethical and patriarchal.

@aral @amydiehl

Sure, I mean, I get it. You don't become a billionaire without fucking over a lot of people. But once you are in this position, having a solid DEI program, respecting workers rights, treating people with respect and so on would not jeopardize your position in any way. It just shows how deeply entrenched white male supremacy is in these people. SMFH

@Mikal @aral @amydiehl It also highlights the fact that incentives matter.. even in the HR and DEI departments.

@Mikal @amydiehl Yeah, kings rarely abolish the monarchy.

@amydiehl
Guess what? It isn’t just Apple 🙄
Maybe you ought to believe what the women in your lives tell you all!!!

@amydiehl

There not progressive

The only thing they are is a fashion company with just as many ethics as one.
