@MayInToronto @uxmark @chris @Greengordon And electoral reform, so everyone's vote counts. We need proportional representation. Then parties will need leaders who can work together for the best of Canada and not for their own preservation.

@alchemistsstudio @MayInToronto @uxmark @Greengordon and we would also be forever rid of these stupid "Governor General Games" that some are tempted to play because the rules, and consequences, of such games will not only be much clearer for the parties in the House, but will become a matter of common knowledge and expectation with the electorate.

@alchemistsstudio @MayInToronto @uxmark @Greengordon to be replaced with?

(If this is in the context of getting rid of the Monarchy I completely agree, but I would want to keep our system of government, so a GG-type ceremonial head of state is what I'd like -- or at most elected, but remaining ceremonial/constitutional only, like the President of Ireland?)

@chris @MayInToronto @uxmark @Greengordon It's in the context of getting rid of the monarchy. I'm pretty open to any other option with a strong preference the position is elected directly by the people, or at the very least MP's.

@alchemistsstudio @Greengordon @MayInToronto @chris @uxmark

I would be quite happy with a GG chosen by lot to serve a limited term (3, 6 yrs), maybe from the pool of people nominated as Senators, but honestly a random 18 or 65 year old would satisfy me… luck of the draw like a monarchy, but we aren’t stuck with them.
After all, if we try to choose based on merit, they will disappoint us sooner or later 🤷‍♂️

@chris @MayInToronto @uxmark @alchemistsstudio @Greengordon

I’ll beat my usual drum here and say that PR isn’t the only way to mitigate vote splitting, and that many of the alternatives could be in place very quickly if the LPC and NDP agreed and pushed it through… reducing or eliminating the effect of vote splitting helps both parties, and makes a Parliament that better represents Canada.

@DavidM_yeg @MayInToronto @uxmark @alchemistsstudio @Greengordon some sort of proportional representation, (there are DOZENS of examples) is essential to modernize and make our voting systems fair. There is no way around that. The only thing that has stopped it is the status quo parties being petrified of losing absolute power in a majority. Which is… exactly the point and problem. That is why I have been such a big proponent of it for so long.

@DavidM_yeg @chris @MayInToronto @uxmark @alchemistsstudio @Greengordon Trudeau, of course never acted on that promise. Would be good drama if, next week, Trudeau were to announce legislation to implement ranked ballots and ask MPs to support govt until law is passed so next elections in 2025 would use it. One way for Trudeau to stay in power longer.
