After telling people what constellation your planet is in, having them point out that constellations are entirely dependent on what direction you're viewing them from.
@TechBean
LOL - that one's always annoyed me!
#astronomy #DoctorWho
@spacemagick @TechBean didn't someone try to "fix" this by noting that "constellation" just means "collection of stars" and maybe Gallifrey is in a *cluster* called Kasterborous and The Doctor just likes using a misleading term?
@aoanla @TechBean Yes, I believe so. But then you'd have to explain why someone like The Doctor, who spends so much time on Earth apparently speaking English and being all scientific about space and stuff, would repeatedly use what is a very widely known and understood term in a weird alien way rather than something (almost anything) more appropriate. I appreciate that fantasy writers don't required actual scientific knowledge but wasn't there a 'scientific advisor' on the show?
#DoctorWho
@aoanla @TechBean
Whoa - two #DoctorWho #nerd #rants in one day. I think I need a lie down.
#DoctorWho :-)
@spacemagick @TechBean I very much doubt there was a scientific advisor on Doctor Who for most of it's run, to be honest - it's not that kind of show. (Also, to be fair to it, even shows that try to be *vaguely* serious SF - say, Star Trek - make a whole host of science howlers too. Most writers just aren't physicists - and if they were, they'd just mess up the history instead!)
@aoanla @TechBean
I've never thought of #DoctorWho as #ScienceFiction - it's just plain #fantasy.
I would have done the job for free had they asked LOL.
Totally agree also re. #StarTrek they generally just made shit up and then bluffed some technobabble.
Excuse me a minute - I just have to go and reverse the polarity of the neutron flow so my sausages don't burn...
