You may argue that if they wanted to make more money, they could have chosen another profession. But tell me, just because a barista, hotel manager or an airhostess is in the service business, do they stop wanting to make financial gains? Then how is public service any different? Who gets to decide that elected govt. representatives are not to make money on the side? The way I see it, we choose a few people from amongst us to govern us and they carryout their responsibilities like any other job.
I realize that the connotation behind the words Public Service is that it's an act of helping others without expecting anything in return. And that's probably why we use the term to describe what elected govt officials do. But I've always wondered, is it fair to expect govt officials to not have other sources of income, apart from their govt. salary? I know govt. posts come with a lot of perks, but what's wrong in wanting more, provided that it's not coming through bribes or other illegal means?
This is SO messed up.
This investigation reveals 265 coordinated fake local media outlets serving Indian interests. All of them linked to New Delhi.
*Someone* seems to be putting in money into spreading disinformation across the world using fake websites. If THIS gets traced back to our Government, it would be incredibly INCREDIBLY embarrassing.
So. I applied for passport renewal from a makeshift Passport Seva Kendra last Friday, and I received my new passport today!
Here's the timeline of events: The police verification happened on Saturday, the passport was printed and sent via speed post on Monday and it reached me today!
To receive a normal passport within 6 days in India is like winning a lottery! Big kudos to the Cochin RPO! Well done
@RagsNair True but the model is changing. People are now able to individually contribute to open source projects and they are able to hire full time devs/people coz of such donations. Krita and blender exploited this model to their advantage and the benefit is for all.
I don't share the same enthusiasm for commercial soft because even after humongous funding they aren't able to address basic request(like edit button on birdsite) or even address the abuse problem.
One more institutional murder at IIT Madras. Fathima Lathif, an undergraduate student in humanities and social science department committed suicide facing religious and caste discrimination from IIT faculty Sudarshan Padmanabhan, as per her suicide note. IIT Madras is a Brahminical Agrahara which makes the lives of students from minority community perishable in all ways. It is sixth suicide on the campus within two years.
The thing about open-source/free software is that nobody is accountable. And if nobody can be held accountable, the quality goes down. Similarly on #fediverse, unless the creators and administrators are getting compensated for their time and effort, you can't really ask too much of them. You certainly are in no position to make any demands. All you can do is place a request and hope that it gets implemented. This is one of the reasons why I think decentralised social networking won't take off.
Hi @Gargron. Quick question. If I block someone on Mastodon, shouldn't their toots stop appearing on my timeline, even if someone else boosts them? Unfortunately this isn't happening right now, and I'm not sure if that's by design or if it's a bug with @Tusky. Haven't checked on the web app. I tried muting and blocking this person, but I can still see their toots, both, on their profile and on my timeline. I even restarted the app, but it's still there. Help?
#TheManInTheHighCastle is such a good series and it has a wonderful cast, except for the protagonist of the show - Juliana Crane, played by Alexa Davalos. She's very pretty, but she isn't a good actor. Other than that the series has everything going for it; a thought-provoking storyline, well thought-out sets, attention to detail, and a brilliant cast. I wish they had more female characters as well but I get why there aren't - it wouldn't seem realistic in a dictatorship. Overall, a good watch.
Sudden realization: I used to share so many of my favourite songs on Birdsite many many years ago. No idea what made me stop.
So here you go. A song I'm absolutely addicted to right now!
It’s better that we stay true to the cause (which is to make India secular again), and rid ourselves of the ‘hero complex’. Don't create an issue where there isn't one. Don't criticize where there's nothing to criticize.
Validation is nice, but don’t crave for it. Put your energy into something that actually creates some impact, and changes lives.
Start by cutting down on the hate and spreading some positivity instead. I have heard that cat videos are known to relax the mind & soul
Also, not everything has to be made out into a doomsday like situation. You don’t have to react to every tiny bit of news or information. Don’t worry, not reacting, will not make you irrelevant. Moreover, typing fiercely into your keyboards doesn’t constitute activism or a fight for liberty. But as a responsible citizen who has the best interests of the country at heart, it is our duty to act or react as the situation demands, and only when the situation demands it.
We also need to understand that ideologies may differ, but it’s in no way a measure of good or bad. Just because someone shares your ideology or perspective, doesn’t automatically make them a better human being, and vice versa. The world could do with a little less hate, and that change could start with you. If you stop sending out negative energy into the world, the world would have a little less negativity to deal with.
The sooner we realize that there’s more than one way of looking at things, the better. Just because someone doesn’t agree with your point-of-view, doesn’t make them wrong. You can always choose to ignore that person and only pay heed to what like-minded individuals have to say, but then you will lose your ability to view things objectively and logically. That just makes you as biased and unreasonable as them.
Meanwhile on #Birdsite today, a lady who thought she was the authority on mental illness put out a series of tweets which basically said that people should 'shake it off' and rid themselves of mental illness through meditation and exercise. She then received backlash from all quarters, which led to a number of her abusive tweets getting deleted by the birdsite. Surprising! Said person also harbors RW tendencies. She however called her detractors trolls, and moved on. End of bulletin.
Hate is hate even if you're the one spewing it. Make Mastodon a hate-free platform please 🙏
