I can't deal with this weirdly artificial 500 character limit any more, so sadly, I am going to have to move instances.
Recommendations for a new server, and what should I watch out for doing the move over?
@Lorry beige.party is the best! I also moved here for the character limit. also we're not federated with threads. I guess that's a thing of consideration, if you want that or not.
@bazkie I suppose my lifelong goal for a wider Internet doesn't really want to see threads and bluesky (bridges) being fundamentally blocked at server level though. I can see why some would want to, but I'd like to keep the option.
@bazkie I am inclined to go to #infosecexchange but they also block Threads - The #mit server has a 500 limit so that's out.
Hummm - No wonder people have problems joining #Mastodon
Where is #JohnMastodon when you need him!?
@Lorry I can't really agree with that sentiment, considering twitter has an ever worse character limit and you can't change that, and most other social media don't federate with mastodon at all..
so even the worst choices of instances here are at least as good in those regards as other social media!
@bazkie That's fair, I just kind of want the option to see Threads posts without having to login to Facebook though - It's not their fault that they are on #Threads - They went there to escape #Twitter which seems fairly worthy.
I don't think I have ever actually done it, it's just about restrictions being there that I have no control over, like character limit :)
@Lorry just to be clear, I only responded to your "no wonder people have problems joining Mastodon", which irked me a bit!
your desire to find an instance with a large char limit which federates with threads is totally fine with me :)
@bazkie Ah.
I do find it frustrating trying to get non-computer savvy people to #Mastodon - I think it's easy but they don't.
Having worked for large social media companies for far too long, I've been in endless product meetings about the first 5 minutes of:
finding -> signup -> investment or deletion?
That window is small, I don't think Mastodon captures it.
That's fine! It's what Mastodon is & it's what the internet I love was, but most people seem very lazy about new things these days.
@Lorry yes, I agree that Mastodon doesn't capture that "quick onboarding" process, there's multiple steps of both understanding & actions. I remember when I first got here, it took me a while to understand how it worked with accounts and instances, and I'm a nerd!
I love this as a filter. you need to put in some effort to learn how things work. and when you're on here with a fresh account, you don't get an algorithmic feed with suggestions like you get on other sites either (well, maybe these days you do? I heard something like that is being worked on, unfortunately. or maybe it's already here).
another filter, one that forces people to go out and make their own choices, instead of having a (potentially badly incentivized) algorithm pick contacts for them.
I think that these things, along with having no quote toots, make this the nice universe that it is. It does mean it will never be mainstream popular, another thing that I LOVE.
I just know that over the years, all this stuff will change, and this network might become a cesspool of misinformation slop just like the other ones, but for the time being I really love it here
sorry if this toot tastes salty af.. it's because I am but it's not directed towards you, just towards, people in general, corporations, the way the world works, everything focused on profits and growth..
I just hope the fedi will stay beautiful for a while
@bazkie @Lorry@mstdn.social @lorry I moved - It's not that painful.
I mostly agree with you, so don't worry about salty.
