Farmer women and grandmas used to carry bread dough in small grass baskets to the bakery this way, when I was a preschool boy.
Since about 1830 was it in (nearly?) all German states forbidden to have big baking ovens at the house, because those often caused malfires. In some states got community baking houses established, in others the professional bakers had to bake home made dough and charge that by the officially set tarifs (poor business).
