I never even liked reality TV and all its stupid tropes. That makes all of this seem especially unfair.
I’ve mentioned this before, but my brother-in-law produced reality TV shows in the ‘90s and ‘00s and I recall early on—at dinner one night—when he forbad the family from ever appearing on one. It doesn’t matter what you think you’re giving us to work with, he said, we’ll make it—or what you give us—into what we want.
And that’s how NBC made Trump seem smart to America. Even if, after all their work, I still thought he sounded like an idiot who’d never met a best practice.
@Holberg
...and now there's a third, to draw larger conclusions:

@Holberg oof good if horrifying story
America loves a male blowhard
@Holberg So true. I tried watching the odd one and he was not a smart man (nor were many of the contestants). The UK licensed one with Alan Sugar was more intelligent. The New Zealand one was godawful and the “rich guy” is, IIRC, now bankrupt.
@jackyan Well, THAT’S true to the original model haha.
@Holberg I guess a bit like NYC, everyone in NZ (certainly in Wellington) knew the guy was a petty creep. This was the last I had heard:
@jackyan Gosh, what a mess!
@Holberg I said it 25 years ago: they contrive a situation, tell the participants how to react, and call it "reality."
