@DemocracyMattersALot worst thing is that the children pay for the stupidity of the parents
@DemocracyMattersALot I'd change the text in the second panel to "Anti-vaxxers lied to you".
Calling these people idiots is not helpful or constructive. Showing them how they've been misinformed may be (I say 'may' because a lot of them are very resistant to the idea that they may have trusted the wrong people)
“…lot of them are very resistant to the idea that they may have trusted the wrong people)”
I think what you are trying to say is that they are idiots, or even morons?
@Ericthebeeover2 @DemocracyMattersALot can them what you will in the privacy of your own head, but for public health messaging, insulting your target audience isn't effective. That's the point I was trying to make.
The cartoon as it stands is definitely a satisfying bit of schadenfreude, but with a minor tweak, it becomes effective public health messaging as well.
Fair enough. I understand where you are coming from.
@Ericthebeeover2 @DemocracyMattersALot I have a friend who works in public health, so I've picked up a few attitudes from them.
There was also a great example in the Solomon Islands a few years back, where the disinformation led to a significant drop in vaccination rates. When the inevitable outbreak occurred, and people realised who was telling the truth, a lot of them changed their minds.
I think it’s a matter of social media, which has become such a powerful force in the world and has become for many their prime source of information. So many people have dived down conspiracy theory rabbit holes where they feel safe and secure.
This is why many of these people have ceased to trust the word of experts preferring their own echo chambers of their favourite conspiracy theory. Couple that with little or no formal teaching in science and logic and you’ve got the situation we’re in now.
I know I shouldn’t, but I tend to get so bloody angry about this.
@Ericthebeeover2 don't forget all the deliberate disinformation being spread to cause chaos and strife, and achieve certain political ends.
I've been teaching my kids never to trust anything they see online, unless they can verify it via a reputable source. And even then be wary...
@Bern @DemocracyMattersALot
Exactly this
There are no idiots. People just have different values and have internalised different kinds of information.
@DemocracyMattersALot Being vaccinated will keep you off of this web site.
