, 20 Oct 1933, women picket the London Motor Show, calling for a boycott of Austin cars. The manufacturer’s owner had called for married women to be sacked so men could have their jobs.

@CarveHerName How men used to love Austin cars. Traditional, conservative, British. 😜

@CarveHerName Do people realize this is the "Great" the Trumpist "Make America Great" wants us to be "Again"? Where young women gave up jobs to men for lesser paying work or remained at home pregnant, and working older women gave up jobs to stay home and babysit their grandchildren. JD Vance says this quiet MAGA part out loud, and elderly Trump has annointed him his MAGA successor. Men, expect the great MAGA working life of your great-grandfathers, it wasn't romantic, it was crushingly stressful, my dad (b. 1907) worked multiple jobs from the age of 11, and didn't have time to relax, socialize, play games, sports, or indulge in "self-care". Your wife will lose her job to a man, and you will be a one income family, your income.

@pattykimura just for clarity, and not changing your point at all, but this particular sexist policy was in the UK.

@CarveHerName Sadly, this was true in the US, as well. All those US Rosie the Riverters were laid off for the returning US male GIs after WW2.

@CarveHerName Wow some professional signwriting on there 👏

@CarveHerName

When I went into the work force in Ireland, the expectation was that I would stop working [outside the home] once I married.

Part of the debate at the time (and at least the issue had risen to debate stage), was that women who stayed in the workforce after marriage were taking that "woman's" job away from young unmarried women entering the workforce.

@Edelruth @CarveHerName wow there's the logic we see rolled out again and again. False/generated scarcity used to keep people down and infighting.

"Those migrants stealing your houses" (not the rich buying multiple houses).

"Those layabouts on benefits living off your taxes" (not the fact that the rich avoid paying their taxes)

"Those trans women making women's spaces unsafe" (not men making all women, trans and cis unsafe)...
