Friendly reminder: if you need to plan something with many people, then don't do it on public social media.

Use Signal. Use ToR.

If you have a WordPress blog, you can attach it to the Fediverse using a special plugin.

This will let people on Mastodon (and elsewhere on the Fedi) follow your blog, see your blog posts in their timeline, comment on your blog posts, like them, share them etc.

The plugin is written by @pfefferle and is called ActivityPub For WordPress:

wordpress.org/plugins/activity

Note that this only works on independently hosted WordPress blogs.

It does not work on wordpress.com free blogs because they don't allow plugins (there is a paid option at wordpress.com but it's weirdly expensive).

Okay, it's time to tell new users a secret about Mastodon.

Mastodon is (whispers) part of a much bigger network 😮

Mastodon servers use an open standard called ActivityPub to talk to each other. That's how you interact with people on other Mastodon servers.

But, dozens of other federated networks also use ActivityPub, so (this is the good bit!) you can follow people on these other networks from your Mastodon account!

For example:

PixelFed (pixelfed.org) is a photo sharing network, here's a random example account @Iancylkowski

PeerTube (joinpeertube.org) is a video sharing network, with a p2p system that allows videos to go viral even on small servers, here's a random account @craftykat

BookWyrm (joinbookwyrm.com) is a social reading site, an open alternative to Amazon's Goodreads, here's a random account @mouse

Together, Mastodon and these other services form... The Fediverse :fediverse:

PSA: The "verified" symbol you see on Twitter etc means absolutely nothing on Mastodon or the Fediverse. On here, symbols like :verified: are just custom emoji that anyone can use and put after their name. Don't be fooled! 😁

There are ways to verify your identity on here, but the :verified: symbol is not one of them.

The easiest way to verify your identity is if you have a website that people already know is yours. You can paste a special code into your website which will verify your address and it will turn green on your Mastodon profile (see here for instructions: mstdn.social/@feditips/1062741).

Alternatively, you can set up a server as a subdomain of your known website address. For example, the European union set up their own Mastodon server at social.network.europa.eu, and we know it really is the EU because the server address is part of the EU's well-known europa.eu domain.

It's my #introduction time.

For new people wondering why Mastodon is on thousands of servers instead of one:

-It helps protect us all against Elon Musk scenarios. It's very difficult for anyone to buy a network made of thousands of independently owned servers. (It's the same reason why no one owns the world's email network, because there are so many independent providers out there.)

-If your server misbehaves (or sells out to a malevolent billionaire), you can move your account to a different server, or even to a brand new server. Decentralisation means you're never trapped on a site you hate.

-Mastodon is an open platform where anyone can start their own server, and they don't need tech knowledge if they use a service like masto.host or federation.spacebear.ee

...and there are lots more good reasons too, to do with servers using alternative Fediverse software etc, but I'll save that for a future post 😁

I propose a new hashtag: #storyBits

Elements that might be interesting for a story that are even less than half-baked—they're merely ingredients that could potentially lead to an interesting story. Not all will go together, but several can be combined to make something tasty.

For example:
"The universe is made up of only matter and Luck. Magic or electricity is just Luck contained and manifested in different ways. Even life itself is the result of Luck being wrought on inert stuff in space."

Welcome to all the Twitter refugees! 👋

Mastodon and the Fediverse does NOT use NFTs or blockchain or cryptocurrencies. No one is on here trying to get rich, no one is promoting anything.

The Fediverse (which Mastodon is part of) is a federated computer network spread across thousands of independently owned and operated servers. The millions of people on the Fedi can interact with each other regardless of which server they signed up on, because the servers talk to each other through federation.

Federation is a proven and stable way to make a network, it's how telephones and email work for example. It's how social networks should be.

We aren't trying to break anything or compete with anyone. There are no shareholders or venture capitalists. Instead, we work together, donating time or money, and collaborate to make a better social network for its own sake.
