Question for chicken owners, out of curiosity: what do you think the ACTUAL price of a dozen eggs is from the backyard chickens?

Include: feed, enclosure/repairs, lost chickens from predators, vet visits, chicken retirement lodge, chicken sweaters and hats, etc etc? #chickens

At peak, I had 16 hens & had a combo of sex-link brown extralarge & fancy colors hen flock only. Fed organic & they ate scraps. Sold at $5 a dozen or $8 for 2 dozen. Gave a $1 discount for reusing the cartons. That covered their feed, wormer & bedding. I couldn't sell them fast enough to keep up.

I have 7 now. We have enough eggs to glass for the winter & all we can use. They're older and balanced by summer layers & winter layers. None are daily layers by design.

Sorry, got distracted.
Two coops, $300 each for materials. We hired a homeless guy to build them, let him camp with us & fed him. Add another $400.
The yard is already stockade fenced.
My husband built the runs, 8' high wire interior fences, and netting (Hawk issues). We added solar powered doors (raccoon issues). Add another $1000.
I have a brooding set-up & raised all my friends' birds for veggies. Another $100?
My birds lay for 5-7 yrs & I raise peeps every 3-4 years.
