I have subscribed to a bunch of hashtags and I posted some stuff and all in all this seems like a really nice place full of very nice people.

@AngryBlackLady

I'm really glad you're here! I missed being able to follow you since I left the other... Place.

@AngryBlackLady it's lovely to see you here! Have missed your voice from the bird place.

@AngryBlackLady I am glad you are here, and are having a decent time so far!

That has not been the experience of many black folks in the fediverse however, and its bad enough to motivate them to start their own instance: mastodon.social/@tillshadeisgo

I sincerely hope this wont be the experience you have too.

mastodon.socialMastodon

@AngryBlackLady From the scuttlebutt, it is mostly nice people but also a few dedicated trolls who have found servers with admins/moderators who don't care to bring consequences when the trolls behave terribly towards the marginalized and know how to tinker with the visibility settings of posts/replies to make their troll cave pile-on without many others seeing it.

As often as not, dragging the admins/mods into the light for not handling things gets you/r server blocked instead of the trolls.

@epilonious @AngryBlackLady If you (or anyone reading this) hasn't already discovered, Mastodon allows you to block at the instance/server level. So if you see a lot of nonsense coming from accounts on the same instance you can simply block the whole thing with a few clicks.

@AngryBlackLady It is mostly nice people....It's still the internet though 😆 We have our share of mansplainers, and not the tech bros but some tech folks...you know...like the regular world. But you'll get some good conversation too and when Kissinger died, every single person said he was a war criminal!

@AngryBlackLady
There's a periodic "you're doing it wrong" crew that can be a bit much. Otherwise I think Masto is an underappreciated gem bc the lack of an algorithm means engagement-bait doesn't really work.

@AngryBlackLady hey, welcome to Mastodon. You were one of the bright spots for me on that other site.

@AngryBlackLady So happy to find you here, Imani. I followed you on the , but haven't been back there in some time. Love your voice! Following you here now. All the best to you, always.

@AngryBlackLady It is, mostly, and good to have you here. Of course, every community of humans has a few jerks, but that's life.

@AngryBlackLady Oh, you're here now! Huzzah! 🎉

Same circus, different clowns, but they do tend to be pretty nice.

@AngryBlackLady @seachanger It's really lovely to see you here. I followed you in The Bad Place, and I'm very happy to read what you share. Thank you for coming over!

@AngryBlackLady

I'm really happy to see you and your words back in my feed...

@AngryBlackLady Really glad to see you here! It’s a different paradigm but not in a bad way. May you find more good than bad (my experience has been positive but I believe the reports of racist fuckwadism).

@AngryBlackLady Welcome!

Doing it right so far.

Well, there's really no "right"; you can do Mastodon however you want. But subscribing to hashtags and posting are two good ways to experience the benefits of the Fediverse.

(Some people prefer to be more low-key and just wander around and watch for a while. That's also a very good way to start.)
